The competition between Xiong Jing Nan and Angela Lee are warming up ahead of their three-part match for the ONE women’s straw world title.
Xiong will once again defend the women’s strawweight gold against Lee, ONE women’s atomweight world champion, at ONE on Prime Video 2: Xiong vs. Lee III. The event will take place on September 30 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The two women’s world champions have met twice before, with both Xiong and Lee winning their respective world titles. It seems the familiarity has flared into disdain as both fighters get ready to take each other down.
Xiong shared on Instagram a snippet of Lee talking about the Chinese superstar’s style and how the strawweight queen has become expected in her recent bouts, and barely impressed.
No one paid any attention, Xiong Jing Nan wrote:
“We’ll see if you’re impressed when I finish you again👊 #ONEonPrimeVideo2”
Lee In the video, Xiong has been slowing down so far to take a more cautious and passive approach in her skirmishes.
“I adjusted the last games she had. Honestly, I – along with the rest of the fans – and I’m pretty sure I’ve heard Chatri [Sityodtong] as well as saying that they weren’t overly impressed with her performance. I think you can really see that in her most recent performances, she plays not to lose instead of to win. And there’s a big difference there.”
Xiong, who has held the world championship since January 2018, is the only woman to ever defeat Lee in the ring. She did just that during their first encounter at ONE: A New Era in March 2019, successfully defending her strap.
However, Lee won her favor just seven months later when she submitted Xiong at ONE: Century Part I in October of that year to retain her atomic-class throne.
Xiong Jing Nan is ready to face Stamp Fairtex in the atomic weight category
Xiong Jing Nan is said to be a forward in women’s straw weight history and she even imagines going up against the elites in the atomic weight class.
In a previous interview with ONE Championship, Xiong said that she wants to drop down a weight class and have a bout with former dual-sport world champion Stamp Fairtex.
Stamp, who holds both ONE Muay Thai and kickboxing women’s atomweight world titles, has since turned to mixed martial arts and even won the ONE World Atomweight World Grand Prix.
“I think I will like this. I’ve always been a challenger. Although with age, my physicality and sports have changed, but I never give up. Anyone is worthy of my respect and learning. I think I can learn from anyone’s strengths and this will help me grow,” said Xiong Jing Nan.
