Jakarta capital:

Indonesian authorities on Tuesday arrested a woman carrying a gun outside the presidential palace in Jakarta, although the country’s leader was not there at the time and no one was injured, officials said.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. local time (0000 GMT), a presidential official, Ali Mochtar Ngabalin, said.

Ali said the woman did not enter the palace grounds and President Joko Widodo was also not present.

Ali said that she was wearing a niqab, or Islamic veil, and was carrying the Quran.

The woman in her 20s was detained by security officers after swinging a gun near the palace, he added.

A Jakarta police spokesman said the woman is currently being questioned, but it is unclear what her motives were or how she obtained the weapon.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has been hit by terrorist attacks in the past, sometimes targeting government officials and security forces.

Police have shot dead a woman who opened fire on officers at the national police headquarters in Jakarta last year in an ISIS-inspired attack.
