Will Ferrell is reportedly in talks to play the character of the NFL’s John Madden in an upcoming theatrical film titled Madden. Citing multiple unnamed sources, Duration is reporting that the project will be directed by five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook), and a partnership between Amazon and MGM.
Although Amazon declined to comment on this news, the idea of Madden is said to have been in development for some time. Based on a screenplay by Cambron Clark, which appeared on the Black List, Russell worked on revisions until the project was halted due to a writers’ strike.
Madden, classified as a Prime Video Sports Original, aims to explore the life of the charismatic Madden, a prominent figure on the NFL fringes. Madden’s aspiration was to become head coach, and he has enjoyed great success in that role. However, the demanding nature of the job eventually had serious consequences, prompting him to give up coaching.
The film will primarily focus on Madden’s friendship with Al Davis, the owner of the Oakland Raiders, and how Madden finds a new path to more recognition. Despite having no personal experience with video games, Madden has played a key role in revolutionizing the gaming industry as the head of the popular, ongoing Madden NFL franchise. is the best-selling book published by Electronic Arts.
