Why the Batgirl movie will never be released, even though it was made

Things are getting a little weird in Gotham City. Bat girlUpcoming DC Comics movie directed by Ugly for life duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is said to be no longer coming to HBO Max and will not be released in any way.

According to a report from The New York Post and The Wrap, Bat girl has been effectively implemented. Filming ended in March and the project was tested with audiences. Reports indicate that this is where the film is doomed, poorly tested during a time when new management at Warner Bros. is looking to rebuild DC’s theater brand.

It’s not particularly common for a finished franchise movie to be completely shelved like this, and it’s especially odd these days with streaming platforms hungry for content. However, new Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav has big plans to overhaul of the company’s entire film productionand mode changes often mean that many bets have inevitably been eliminated in sometimes surprising ways.

Bat girl had a long history of development and torture. First announced in 2017the original movie has Avengers director Joss Whedon stick with the previous director exit in 2018. The movie finally gathered a strong cast, with In the heights breakout star Leslie Grace in the lead roleBrendan Fraser set to play the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton return in some way as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Polygon contacted Warner Bros. but received no comment at the time of publication.
