Why does Shovel Knight create so many Cameos? “We thought it was hilarious”

Shovel Knight, the character, first appeared in 2014 in a video game called Shovel Knight. The game was praised upon release and remembered as a well-run platformer inspired by the NES classics. Since then, the game has received numerous DLC additions and Shovel Knight has appeared in spin-offs such as Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and most recently the player-like platformer, Shovel Knight Digi. More impressive, however, is the fact that Shovel Knight tends to appear in games that don’t have him in the title. Shovel Knight has appeared as himself, or is referenced, in at least 33 non-Shovel Knight games. He’s even gotten his own Amiibo and a line of kids’ eating toys with Arby’s.

Prior to the release of Shovel Knight Dig, we spoke with Celia Schilling of Yacht Club, who handles licensing and marketing for Shovel Knight, and asked a simple question: Why Shovel Knight in so many ways? not Shovel Knight? “Oh, I don’t know. There’s a lot of them,” Schilling said. “We think it’s funny. It’s just that we’ve always imagined Shovel Knight like an overarching universe. To see Shovel Knight in different things or as Arby’s children’s meal toys – that’s the thing. that means a lot to our brand. And that’s fun.”

Shovel Knight Dig is more than just a cameo for knights with a unique weapon. Dig is a lifelike game that gives Shovel Knight a host of new abilities and upgrades, but unlike games like Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon (a puzzle game), Dig feels it almost has. could be a sequel. However, it is not called Shovel Knight 2 for a very specific reason. “It can’t be a sequel because it’s a prequel,” Schilling said. “It follows Shovel Knight’s point of view of his story, so technically it’s a prequel to Shovel of Hope. It takes you back to the good old days of him and Shield Knight just adventure and defeat the bad guys and collect treasures.”

Its genre might also rule it out as an appropriately numbered sequel. And although Yacht Club was heavily involved in its development, as with all Shovel Knight spin-offs, it was primarily developed by Nitrome. “The thought process for [Dig] begins when we complete the Treasure Trove. We were like, ‘Okay, what’s next?’ And we’re experimenting with different ideas. “Shilling said.” What about a roguelike platforming game where there’s a lot going on and the levels are constantly changing? But who will do it? “

Yacht Club has been eyeing Nitrome for a while, a developer with a history of popular browser games as well as Bomb Chicken, the 2018 puzzle platform. “We have millions of ideas like.. “I don’t know, Shovel Knight party or figurine or something. And that’s just one of them that we’re really into and Nitrome has experience with that kind of thing,” Schilling said. The Yacht Club provided Nitrome with the base yard and Nitrome came back with lots of ideas, and the project has since come together.

In 2020, Yacht Club started conversations with Apple Arcade about bringing something to the mobile subscription platform. “Apple is great and they’re not asking for exclusivity or anything like that because Dig will launch on Switch, PC, and Apple Arcade at the same time,” Schillings said. “Remember, we have plans to expand our platform list in the future, but right now – and so does Nitrome – but at Yacht Club Games we put our best into everything. So , it’s good to focus on a few platforms and say, ‘Okay, we’re releasing here.’ “

On what’s next for the Yacht Club after Dig launches, Mina the Hollower Yacht Club’s next game. Unlike recent Shovel Knight publishing and publishing efforts (like the release of Cyber Shadow), Mina the Hollower is a brand new game developed in-house that has recently raised more than 1, $2 million on Kickstarter. “In Nintendo terms, Shovel Knight is our Mario and Mina is our Zelda,” said Schilling. “And then we had an untitled project that I couldn’t talk about.”
