Basically, everything in Dragon’s House through episode 5 led to Alicent entering Rhaenyra’s wedding in a bright green dress. While the queen’s late arrival was noticed by all, it fell on Strong Larryprobably Dragon’s Houseis the smartest character, to suggest to the audience why the color of the dress really matters.
First of all, the green is almost as good as you can get from the traditional black and red of House Targaryensymbolizes lack of support for family – and Rhaenyra – by the queen. More importantly, as Larys explains, the light atop the Hightower in the Old Town (the Alicent family residence and the building that bears their name) glows green as a symbol of war, a bit more info added into a program that does not have its source documentation, George RR Martin’s Fire & Blood.
In other words, Alicent realized the betrayal of trust from Rhaenyra and her husband. King Viserys, which also caused her father, Otto, to leave King’s Landing and his position as Hand of the King, serious enough for Alicent to declare war on House Targaryen. As her first act of true self-control, Alicent chose to end the friendship that was not easy – and always unequal in one direction or another – the friendship that Rhaenyra and Alicent had once shared.
Of course, this massive split is likely to force the rest of Westeros to choose which side of House Targaryen to side with, but more importantly it will also force the two sides to find a way to define themselves. That’s where the dress itself comes into play.
Without saying too much about what’s to come, it’s probably worth knowing that Alicent’s followers will now be known as the Greens, while Rhaenyra’s cohort will be Blacks, the only ones. maintaining the traditional colors of House Targaryen. And these two factions will form our two main factions as the Dance of the Dragons moves forward.
