Unmasking Pedro Pascal, the intricate new face of science fiction

Mean physical pain?

Pain of all kinds. I don’t like psychological, emotional or physical pain. Some people will be like, Oh, I know I’ll most likely mess something up, I have to try. God damn it. That thing. I don’t think of myself as—I’m not a tough guy.

I don’t live that way. I am the lubricant. I want everyone to feel comfortable. I don’t know how that works to anyone’s comfort level. I am a pleaser.

I see some of that on social media, where you seem to do everything you can to make sci-fi fans more friendly and inclusive. For example, you are very supportive of your sister, who became transgender in 2021. How are you navigating your role in the political space?

Totally improvised and ended up just making mistakes on the side, like… [very long pause, two deep sighs] My whole heart is put in, you know, underdog. It is not an option. Like, how could anyone not support those who deserve it, deserve it, and need more of it than you. Do you know what I mean?

Yeah, but some actors will say, My star is rising, I don’t want to get involved in this.

Maybe if you pause to think about it, it might keep you from doing the right thing. And this looks like the bare minimum. Like, the bare minimum.

You mean one Instagram post is not enough?

No, that’s not it. My personal hope is to seize the opportunity to be served in genuine ways. I’m keeping my eyes open. The truth is, I don’t think I’ve done nearly enough. I’m, like, a LIB-ER-AL, but there are contradictions there too, because we live under capitalism. I guess we carry, you know, the weight of that shame?

The weight of capitalist shame? Is the fact that you make money a bad thing?

You had success late in your career. You have been continuously working—

I was constantly working, and it was a typical total struggle, but there was always someone who could bail me out—help me pay my rent or help me get groceries.

But now you have to roll with all your money like Demi Moore.

[Laughs] Demi Moore in Indecent proposal?

I do not have body suppose, I think. She’s basically the only one who can pull it off. Yes, I get my cash. I spread it all over the bed and rolled in it.

I know. But seriously, what do you think of your recent popularity?

I didn’t get it Game of Thrones until I was in my thirties. And so, the number of times I got help and the number of people I could rely on during really tough times—I’ll never let some of them buy dinner again. I want to take care of people as much as they took care of me.
