Former President Donald Trump said in a lengthy statement Monday that the FBI was conducting a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate.
The circumstances were not immediately clear. Spokespersons for the FBI and Department of Justice did not return messages seeking comment Monday night.
“After working and cooperating with relevant Government agencies, an unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate,” Trump said in his statement.
The Justice Department has been investigating the discovery of boxes of files containing classified information that were brought to Mar-a-Lago after Trump’s presidency ended. It is not clear whether the FBI search is related to that investigation.
A separate investigation into efforts by Trump allies to annul the results of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol is also growing. in Washington.
