Trudeau and Zelenskyy hold first official call in 2023


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had an “important conversation” with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday.

The phone call between the two leaders—which took place while Prime Minister Trudeau was on vacation in Jamaica—was their first official meeting of the new year.

“We discussed strengthening Ukraine’s defenses against threats and escalation risks on the front,” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter, adding that he “expressed gratitude.” for Canada’s support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also said that he and Trudeau had agreed on steps for his “peace formula”.

Trudeau addressed Ukraine’s peace plan in year-end interviews with National News CTV Chief News Anchor and Senior Editor Omar Sachedina, which aired December 31.

“That’s what we’re all working towards, but it won’t be on Russian terms,” ​​Trudeau told Sachedina. “That will be on Ukraine’s terms, because Russia has made a terrible miscalculation thinking that it can invade a peaceful neighbor and get away with it.”

He added that it was “important not only for Ukraine, but important for the world” to stand up to Russia’s aggression.
