2022 is an eventful year for the data industry. As global enterprises focus on getting the most out of their data assets, the companies providing the infrastructure for the data stack have taken significant steps to build their offerings. . Snowflake and Databricks have launched multiple industry-specific offerings as well as brand new feature sets, while Teradata has made a move to take on both. Questions about privacy in the metaverse also draw attention.
Here are VentureBeat’s top five data stories of 2022:
Teradata takes on Snowflake and Databricks with a cloud-based platform
In August, Teradata Launched two new products – VantageCloud Lake and ClearScape Analytics – to better compete with Snowflake and Databricks. VantageCloud Lake, as the company explained, extends its Vantage data lake to a more flexible cloud model while ClearScape helps businesses leverage analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence development workloads (AI) new in the cloud. The combination of the two promises to streamline data science workflows, supporting ModelOps and improve reusability from within a single platform.
The offering also leverages Teradata’s various R&D activities for intelligent scaling, allowing users to scale based on actual resource usage rather than simple static metrics. It also promises a lower total cost of ownership and direct support for more types of analytical processing.
“Snowflakes and data tile There is no longer the only answer for smaller data and analytics workloads, especially in larger organizations, says Hillary Ashton, product manager at Teradata.
Why SQLite Can Be the Platform for Digital Advancement
Open source database SQLite as the title when many companies, including Cloudfare and Fly, announced that they were building projects around it. The tool is 20 years old and is written in the old C, simple but considered the foundation for digital advancement. According to the developers, adding SQLite helps them deliver more complex applications. Data can be stored locally on an edge node and then replicated worldwide. In addition, its basic, single-threaded system often comes in handy in small projects.
Kent Dodds, a developer who regularly implements SQLite in projects, said: “It’s been amazing in development. “[There’s] no need to set up and run a database server (or docker container). It is just a file. You can even send the database file to a colleague if you need help with something.”
With that said, even as adoption grows, there are still a lot of issues surrounding SQLite (such as lack of support tools) that need to be addressed.
Metaverse (as we understand it now) is the next phase of the internet, but what will happen to data privacy when it becomes prominent? it could also be a “clash of giants.” Metaverse wants to collect new, undiscovered personal information, even to the point of taking notes and analyzing where your eyes are on the screen and how long you look at certain products. On the other hand, data privacy wants protect consumers from this ceaseless cherry picking. One can bet that in the new online economy of the future, a lot of new startups will emerge on both sides.
22 open source datasets to augment AI models
While data is new, information gathered by a company alone may not always provide the variety needed for an AI/ML project. To solve this problem, individuals, companies, and governments share open source datasets that are free to use and build. Their reasons for sharing data may vary from case to case, but the information may be what your project needs. List of top VB open source datasets including OpenStreet Map, Kaggle, US census, Data.gov, Data.Europa.Eu, Data.Gov.UK, PLOS and Open Science.
Snowflake’s industry-focused data services
Finally, Snowflake has announced industry-specific versions of its data cloud to serve retail, health care and life sciences career. This move was made in response Industrial services of Databricks and with the support of multiple technology, data, application and consulting partners, including Equifax, Dataiku, H20.ai, Cognizant, Deloitte and Strata.
