TikTok trend sees Gen Z women ‘free bleeding’ and ditching tampons and pads

Gen Z women are embracing the new ‘free bleeding’ trend, opting not to use any sanitary products when they menstruate in order to “honour their bodies”.

The trend has gone viral on TikTok, with many young women documenting their messy yet liberating experiences.

A creator by the name of Sacralsecret shared how she doesn’t leave the house during her bleed.

“I stay home when I’m on my period. I stay home and I bleed,” she told her 184,000 TikTok followers.

The influencer said that if she did have to go out, she would wear period underwear but when at home, she would walk around the house using a towel.

She said free bleeding “hits different”, calling the experience “orgasmic”.

The video sparked conversation in the comments with opinion divided and questions galore.

“Why can’t you use a pad? Sorry that’s a general question. Aren’t you still free bleeding onto the pad?” one person asked.

Another added: “Is this some kind of a cult??”

“My endometriosis cringed when you said you love the cramp and contractions,” a third wrote.

“Wouldn’t the same thing happen if you just use pads?” another person wrote.

A Tiktoker by the name of Luckyangie, responded to the video, saying she has also been “free bleeding” for the past two years, and explained it had been “life-changing” in that she no longer has cramps, and her period is light and short.

According to the New York Post, holistic Doctor Amy Carmichael says there is “no scientific research available to substantiate the claim free bleeding leads to lighter periods”.

However, Dr Carmichael said the free bleeding trend was a good thing as it helps to “destigmatise periods.”
