Avatar: The Road of Water ended Thursday with an impressive global revenue of $1.17 billion.
The 20th Century and Disney movie is doing well midweek at the holiday box office. Only on Thursday, water path earned an additional $67.9 million, including $20 million in North America — the biggest Thursday of the year — and $47.9 million overseas.
James Cameron’s big-budget sequel crossed the $1 billion mark globally on Tuesday, its 14th day of release. It’s only the sixth film to hit that milestone in its first two weeks of release, and the first to do so since. Spider-Man: No Way HomeReleased in December 2021.
water path may have opened up after expectations earlier this month, but is rapidly making a foothold.
When reporting for the film, Cameron suggested that it needed to earn in the neighborhood of $2 billion to be considered a success (sources put the breakeven figure at around $1.4 billion). water path is one of the most expensive films ever made, with an estimated production budget of more than $400 million and marketing costs bringing the total cost to at least $600 million, according to sources. It also ran three hours and 12 minutes, while the first Avatar run less than 30 minutes.
Cameron is known for defying the odds. In the past 25 years, he has twice proven his opponents wrong Avatar, and a decade before that, Titanic ship, became the highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office.
In December 2009, Avatar opened with a relatively modest $77 million on the way to a global gross of $2.92 billion (including re-releases).
