The Secret Benefits of Being Bored

Boredom seems to be a classic problem of the new age. We lay on the big bed watching movies on our laptops while scrolling through social media on our phones and realized that none of this was working to keep us entertained. But what if instead of changing apps or trying out a new movie, we embrace boredom? Here’s a rundown of how well secret boredom is for you.

What is boredom?

Boredom can be classified as a lack of attractive stimuli. Simply put, it’s a feeling that nothing – inside (thoughts and feelings) or outside (environment) – can entertain you. That’s the feeling when scrolling Facebook and seeing all the posts are the same or hearing the same song over and over. Even though you’re looking for ways to get involved, you can’t find an activity you like.

Dr. Amanda Robins (MSW, PhD. Psychotherapist) was a scholar, an artist and now specializes in supporting young souls. Here’s her explanation of what it means to be bored.

“Boredom is not doing nothing. We can get bored when surrounded by technology and stimulated opportunities – or engage intensely when nothing is there. Boredom is a judgment we apply to experience – and it comes with the implication that we are not released or let loose.

Boredom for some is really the inability to be alone – some of us need occupation or distraction to avoid the experience of “sitting with” our own emotions. Meditation, mindfulness, and learning to appreciate the beauty around us can help us learn to navigate and feel more at ease during periods of inactivity.”

The reason we get bored is because we’re so used to being surrounded by instant information and entertainment at our fingertips. Alex Mason from the Web Profits are much more;

“Boredom is often seen as the stifling enemy of the active mind. We live in a world where so much is going on, at a greater and greater rate every day, more data, more information, more facts, more fiction, constantly being referenced. from more sources than ever before.

But then there’s that little part of the world where it all slows down. Find yourself in a space where your consciousness is no longer bombarded and bombarded with information you didn’t necessarily ask for, instead giving you the opportunity to do the very best that the species has to offer. If you believe in the idea that everything happens for a reason, the mere existence of boredom must have some purpose. So what are some benefits to boredom?

1- Improve your mental health

Like Arwen Bardsleyfrom Evenstar Wellbeing, explains that boredom gives us a chance to get away from life’s distractions and engage with our own minds.

“It would be so much better if you stood ‘bored’ on the train and listened to your thoughts, present in your body, present in the moment and consciously receptive to the information available through all all your senses, feel grateful for the smallest things (like the fact that the train arrived on time today) rather than having to double-check Facebook and plunge into a constant spiral of ‘comparison and despair’ of social networks. If you never check yourself in moments of boredom, how do you really know anything about yourself and the true state of your life? “

2- Increase productivity

Boredom is often the result of doing the same things over and over again and as a result, they no longer excite you. A binge sesh reality TV show can only work for so long. When you feel bored, look at your to-do list and see if a meaningful and productive task strikes your fancy. It could be the motivation you need to go mattress shopping, meaning you can thank your boredom for a good night’s sleep.

3- Make you a better person

One study found that finding a meaningful activity to relieve your boredom often leads people to do more charity work. They participate in volunteer opportunities and sign up to donate blood to help them regain their purpose in life.

4- Improve creativity

When we get bored, a typical solution won’t cut it out. The longer we stay in this state, the more creative our brains have to be to find a way out. Dopamine — aka the reward chemical — is released in your brain for all sorts of reasons. Especially when we do something we like or try a new activity. We are more likely to be creative while feeling bored and this often leads to trying new things and resulting in positive vibes.

Next time you find yourself deep in the Facebook news feed for 3 weeks looking for something, anything to entertain, you try a different method. Turn off the technology, let the boredom seep in, and see if you get a benefit or two from the other end.
