Strange World’s Magic: The Gathering-like card game is completely playable
Disney’s World strange world is, well, strange. yes eccentric underground kingdom, full of blob-like creatures covered in warm colors, but even the “ordinary” land of Avalonia is different from ours. Directors Don Hall and Qui Nguyen set out to create a technology-free world when building Avalonia, and the result is a retro, solar-powered futuristic setting where everyone has their own personal spaceships. but no cell phone or television. One thing that Avalonia do share with our world? Teenagers are still avid gamers, and that includes Ethan Clade (Jaboukie Young-White), the son of Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) and reluctant adventurer-turned farmer (Jake Gyllenhaal).
Hall laughs: “We wanted Ethan to be a gamer because our kids are gamers too. “Every kid, every teenager today is a gamer.”

But without computers and consoles, the filmmakers of strange world had to rely on another source of inspiration for Ethan’s hobby of gaming: tablet gaming. enter primitive outpost, the card game that Ethan and his friends are passionate about. In primitive outpost, players must work together to establish a settlement in the wilderness, learning to cooperate with the environment. We don’t really understand the specific mechanisms of primitive outpost in the film, but Hall told us the game was done.
“There are practical rules. And there are more cards than we show, he explained.
“Playable!” bell in Nguyen. “Obviously it’s based on a bit Catania and Magic: Gatherlike those factors go hand in hand.”
If the general plot of primitive outpost — i.e. living with the wild instead of conquering it — sounds familiar, it’s 100% intentional. Ethan plays games with his father and grandfather, the flamboyant adventurer Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid). The two older men were more concerned with attacking the creatures and protecting their stronghold from the environment than understanding it. Hints Ethan whines and tries in vain to convince them to grasp the matter.
“Rules of the game [were] really secrecy is the theme of the whole movie,” Nguyen said. “It was a good trick so that Ethan could say, Hey, this is the point of all this, living in harmony with your surroundings.“
