i come back from GamesBeat Summit 2023, and somehow I caught the PlayStation event on the airport’s weak wifi a while after my plane landed. They thought they could fool me by broadcasting it while I was still exhausted from the event, but I persevered! Now I’m not sure what the problem is, because seriously, what was that gig? Most of the PlayStation’s first-party studios missed it, and very little of what they showed interested me. Also, what is that handheld and why does it look like bad photoshop work?
Of the games they’ve shown, the only one that made me feel anything was the extended Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer. I like the idea of Peter trying to deal with Venom, the black suit, and Kraven at the same time – it’s certainly better in the game than in the movie, for example – with Miles playing a straight man. Besieged there you start acting strange. Though it does make me wonder why they’re hyping letting Tony Todd voice Venom only to have him say three words in the teaser trailer and sit completely in the game trailer.
Speaking of voiceless characters, I considered that weird jungle trailer Metal Gear Solid as soon as I saw that dead frog. Hopefully David Hayter will return to voice Snake after Kiefer Sutherland’s desirable performance. Of course, the most exciting part of the event comes later, when Xbox so actively posting an image of all the games during the showcase will also come to its platform. I live for the pettiness of the company. Aside from that, it’s encouraging as we know that Xbox fans are also looking at more new releases over the next few months.
Personally, I’ll be spending the weekend looking at some games and trying out The Lord of the Rings: Gollum when it’s finally on the release list. I was quite skeptical about Gollum over two years ago when i see a preview build. Specifically, I think the game is having an identity crisis and say it looks like a smaller version of Styx: Master of Shadows. I don’t claim to be a prophet and I’d be happy to be proven wrong about the game. But judging from what I’ve seen, it’s somehow an upgraded version of Gollum. It’s Gollum with make up ABOVE. I’ll give the game a fair shot, but what I’ve seen so far is not very encouraging.
