Russia-backed official in Ukraine’s Kherson dies after attack


MOSCOW: An official of the Russian occupation authorities in Ukraine‘S Kherson The area died after an assassination attempt, the Moscow-backed local government said.
Vitaly Gura, deputy chief of the Kakhovka district office, “died from her injuries,” local official Katerina Gubareva, said on Telegram.
Gura was attacked at his home on Saturday morning and was seriously wounded by bullets, a source in the Russian-backed government told TASS news agency.
Kakhovka is about 80 km (50 mi) east of the city of Kherson.
Several assassination attempts have been reported against officials in Ukrainian regions captured by Russia since the start of military operations in Ukraine in February.
Russia has taken control of a large part of the Kherson region and part of the vicinity Zaporizhzhia in recent months, and has begun to introduce the ruble as a currency and distribute Russian passports there.
A counterattack by the Ukrainian army managed to push back parts of the Kherson area, but was still unable to break through the Russian defenses to reach the city of Kherson.
