Brighton have appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a four-year contract.

The Italian was out of work after leaving Shakhtar Donetsk in July following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Before that, he spent 3 years leading Sassuolo on the Serie A side before moving to Shakhtar.

De Zebri met chairman Tony Bloom, chief executives Paul Barber and David Weir in London earlier this week and flew to Brighton on Friday before watching a closed-door friendly at Amex on Saturday.

Brighton have also agreed deals with De Zebri’s coaching staff and hope to secure the group’s spot for their Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday a week.

Brighton are currently fourth in the Premier League and have been looking for a new manager since Graham Potter left Chelsea earlier this month.

De Zerbi’s coaching career so far

  • 2013 to 2014: Started his coaching career with Italian amateur team Darfo Boario.
  • 2014 to 2016: Joined Serie C side Foggia, won the Coppa Italia Serie C and almost missed out on promotion.
  • 2016: Spent two and a half months in Serie A Palermo, but was sacked after a lousy start to the season.
  • 2017 to 2018: Join newly promoted Serie A side, Benevento. De Zerbi received rave reviews despite his side being relegated back to Serie B.
  • 2018 to 2021: Sassuolo’s appointed manager led the club to two consecutive eighth places. Missed the Europa Conference League against Roma because of goal difference in 2021.
  • 2021 to 2022: Gets first job outside of Italy at Shakhtar Donetsk, wins Ukraine Super Cup in September 2021. Left behind due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

What’s going to happen to De Zerbi?
