LONDON — Now, having been crowned with her husband, King Charles III’s wife is officially known as Queen Camilla.
While it sounds more formal than “queen consort”, the title change doesn’t signify any practical difference in the 75-year-old royal’s role.
The Queen’s consorts do not officially share the sovereign’s powers, and removing the “spouse” part of the title doesn’t change that. However, the change marks an important milestone in Camilla’s decades-long road to recovering her image – from someone who was once humiliated as another woman during Charles’ first marriage to Princess Diana, becoming a senior member of the royal family was accepted by the majority of the British public.
The question of what title Camilla will hold when Charles becomes king has long been a subject of controversy, given the sensitivity of her status as Charles’ second wife.
Camilla and her first husband, Andrew Parker-Bowles, divorced in 1995, shortly after Charles gave an explosive TV interview acknowledging his relationship with Camilla. Charles and Diana divorced the following year. In 1997, the whole world was deeply saddened when Diana died in a car accident. Camilla and Charles waited until 2005 to marry in a private civil ceremony of little importance.
For many years, it was unclear whether Camilla would eventually be crowned queen.
Queen Elizabeth II settled the matter last year, when she blessed Camilla to be made queen. The endorsement is seen by many as an official sign that the royal family has finally accepted Camilla as a respected senior member.
Last month, Buckingham Palace’s official coronation invitation for the first time referred to Camilla as “Queen Camilla”. At the time, British media reported that palace officials believed it was the right time to introduce the title, because several months had passed since Elizabeth’s death in September. .
The most recent queen in British history was the wife of George VI, Queen Elizabeth, who was known as the “Queen” and later Queen Mother.
