Prove your home in 10 easy steps

Your little air bubbles are growing and soon they will tear the house apart with their own two feet. The stages of crawling to walking and exploring will happen faster than you expect. For your extra peace of mind, here are baby-fighting essentials that you can put in place in time for their big moves.

1) Up their level

It’s hard to see things from a child’s perspective when you’ve been taller than 5ft for so many years now. Lower yourself to their level and see what ‘interesting’ and dangerous things catch your eye. A lot of risks can be dealt with if you just take the time to identify them properly.

2) Power cords and sockets

– Place the safety plug on any outlet that is not in use

– Keep the device cord out of reach

– Leave appliances (such as toasters and hair dryers) unplugged when not in use

3) Doors

A sudden gust of wind is something you can’t plan for but it can send heavy doors flying into your child’s body.

– Check all doors to make sure they are always open/closed
– Close all doors whenever possible
– Keep a collection of door stoppers to keep them open when needed

4) Danger of suffocation

An old collection of dust, coins and buttons might not have bothered you before but now it’s more than just a mess. Clear your floor of any small items that could pose a choking hazard.

5) Poison

Cleaning products, medicines, and even vitamins are all essentials for adults. You can’t live without them so you need to make sure your baby can’t find them. Always keep hazardous chemicals hidden. Better to store them in a tall cupboard so they are out of reach even if you forget the lock one day.

6) Furniture

Most homes have a range of adult furniture that is sturdy and needs to be secured. Everything from bookcases to TV cabinets and dressers can become your child’s new climbing wall. Of course, discourage this behavior, but also secure any heavy furniture to the floor/wall for less risk. Look for sharp corners low to the ground, such as on a coffee table, and cover them, or consider if there are safer short-term alternatives.

7) Gate

Install safety gates around any restricted areas such as stairs or adult-only rooms with common household items such as kits, laundry chemicals, or computers.

8) Curtains and blinds

Get rid of any lost zippers that could be wrapped around your baby’s neck.

9) Beware of the abuse of baby testing

She said that overusing safety measures was actually a mistake.

“A house does not need to be “proved to a toddler” until the child can move, i.e. crawl. So at around 5-6 months old, it’s time for parents to get ready for their baby’s next two years of “accidents ready to happen”: as a fully mobile, mindless being common sense.
I preach it’s important to avoid developing a “tide sign”. There still needs to be a few things within their grasp, which are ‘Uh-uh, don’t touch, not toys’ items, to allow you to start teaching your toddler the difference. distinguish between right and wrong behavior. This makes it much easier to visit uncovered homes for toddlers.”

10) Always re-evaluate

Checking on a baby is a constant adventure. The things your baby loves at 7-8 months will be different when he is 1 year old and the things he likes when he is 2. As he grows, he will be able to reach higher and climb more. The best proof for a baby is the kind that grows with your child.
