Almost every day, around 1 p.m., Maurice Kamara takes a lunch break to sell clothes at a posh boutique in Soho and gets down to her real job: filming videos of people’s outfits for TikTok. The 35-year-old Brooklyn native strolled the neighborhood’s cobblestone streets in a large circle, peering intently at passersby for spreading gold. Kamara, who has a fashion page People Gallery has over 500,000 followers between TikTok and Instagram, is open minded to any and all styles. He caught a a guy named Cris wearing a vintage Michael Jackson t-shirt and a gorgeous Chopova Lowena dress, and Aziz Ansari in a Japanese-style jacket and navy blue chinos. The quality that unites the two is Kamara’s distinctive, discerning eye. During fashion week, I follow and watch his progress. As we walked down Wooster St, we passed an elegant woman dressed as a rich cowboy, with a suede jacket, flared jeans and a Rolex on her wrist. She, I ask? Kamara shook her head. His curation is a combination of power — the Ansaris of the neighborhood — and pure intuition. “I just met that person and I knew: it was the right fit,” Kamara said.
In 2022, there are only a handful of surefire ways to blow up your personal style profile. One of them is being featured on TPG, where the best videos get millions of views and can drive tens of thousands of followers to your page. That’s why as we walked, Kamara was looking for messages coming from someone at Tory Burch who was asking if he could take a video at the brand’s show later in the evening. not that day. (He can’t—he’s being called for store closures.) That’s why Coach hired him for a few sponsored videos this season and why he’s the one. guest at Marni’s Brooklyn show earlier this week – his first fashion show ever. Madonna has expressed interest in making a video and “every record label in the US,” as Kamara puts it, has contacted asking him to film their upcoming artists. So far, he keeps the site mostly organic. “Sometimes celebrities also get a ticket,” he said. “But mostly I just try to find the best fit.” Now, for certain online Gen-Z fashion fans, Kamara is essentially a modern version of Sartorialist or Bill Cunningham—a guy whose material really fits and the sub-style. culture, but still very in tune with the trend of ups and downs of clothing. He quickly mentioned it A$AP Rocky, Bella Hadidand Frank Ocean are recognized fans of the site, even though they haven’t posted the video — at least not yet.
The real beauty of Kamara’s videos is not necessarily found in his fashion, but in his pure, unbroken enthusiasm behind the camera. Finally, we reached the corner of Prince and Mercer, Kamara’s favorite hunting ground, where the one-of-a-kind punch of the Fanelli and Mercer Hotel made a big fight. “This is my area,” he said. Jared Leto elegant in tight jeans and ON running shoes. Kamara quickly brought him down. “Yes, it is not,” he said. Suddenly, his patience paid off: a woman in a vibrant orange dress and shirt-blazer of a Sacai tuxedo passed by. Kamara ran after her, phone in hand. After quickly showing her the TPG page, Kamara began using the disarming and internet-famous script he uses in most of his videos: “Hey how are you today? What is your name and where you come from? “If she was worried at first, Bea from Oregon smiled and relaxed as Kamara continued her quick fire in a deep Brooklyn accent. TPG is a good place to find style inspiration, but it’s a great place to see fun-filled human interactions, thanks to Kamara’s staccato ads. Saccai shirt? “Dayum!” Off-White x Nike sneakers? “Stop playing with her! Right!” Gucci bag? “Okay!” Classic Dior hijab? “Oh my, you look great today.” There are many ways to check relevance on TikTok, but Kamara’s best videos are pure viral footage. Lil Uzi Vert ends with Uzi opening a Goyard bag to reveal a pile of money inside, much to Kamara’s amusement. It’s both hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming — the perfect TikTok, if any.
