LOTR: Return To Moria reveals new screenshots and information

The developer of Free Range Games just revealed more about The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, its survival crafting game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth. During a recent live stream, the developers showcased concept art, screenshots, and further explained their ethos in developing the game.

Return to Moria is set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, a period also known as the “Age of Men” that begins directly after the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In Return to Moria, however, players will take the mantle of the dwarves who are adventuring into the threatened elven and Balrog mines of Moria to reclaim their legacy.

Part of the live stream went into detail about Middle-earth lore, including why the team decided to focus on Dwarf lore and how they approached building the world of Moria while respecting tradition. Tolkien’s original theory.

A lot of work has been done to supplement the lore of the dwarves, with players being able to rediscover layers of Dwarf’s history as they delve deeper into the ancient halls of Moria, also known as Khazad- dûm or Dwarrowdelf.

The developers also discussed how the game will play as part of the stream. Return to Moria bills itself as “the only survival crafting video game set in the Fourth Middle Ages”, bringing a new kind of gameplay to Tolkien’s heavily adapted works.

Along with the expected mining, crafting, and combat elements, Free Range also discusses some of its more unique gameplay features, to match the world of Moria. Players will have to manage light and darkness – with the dangers of Moria’s darkness made clear during the events of Fellowship of the Ring. In addition to attracting danger, darkness can also have an impact on a character’s energy and psychological health.

Players will also have to be aware of how noisy they can be as they delve into the depths of Moria, with orcs not being the only danger players have to worry about.

Free Range Games confirmed during the live stream that Return to Moria will arrive sometime in 2023.
