Jets winger DJ Reed heaped praise on rookie teammate Garrett Wilson following Sunday’s win, told reporters Wilson “has that Justin Jefferson vibe.”
Jefferson had a historic rookie season for the Vikings in 2020, passing 1,400 yards and he’s emerged as one of the NFL’s deadliest weapons with 1,616 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2021.
Reed added, “the boys don’t want to cover up he’s the man,” after Wilson played a starring role in the Jets’ stunning comeback win over the Browns. Wilson totaled 102 yards and two touchdowns in eight visits to the Browns, including a last-minute touchdown of the fourth inning.
After showing promise with 52 yards on his NFL debut, there’s clearly been a plan to get Wilson more involved in offense this week. Wilson was targeted 14 times, nine times more than any other wide receiver.
While he will have to develop a relationship with Zach Wilson when the second-year quarterback returns in Week 4, it is clear the Jets have trusted the rookie as the clue to the offense.
It is too early to call Wilson the next Justin Jefferson, but he is trusted by his teammates.
