Is the Russell Wilson deal worse than the notorious Herschel Walker deal?

The year 2022 is not great when compared to Herschel Walker. Unfortunately for Denver QB Russell WilsonHis struggles have been compared to Walker’s infamous trade from the Cowboys to the Vikings in 1989.

In 1985, the Cowboys won Walker’s rights by placing him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. He played the previous three seasons in the USFL, and before that, he starred in Georgia.

Five games in the 1989 season, with the Cowboys 0-5 and rebuilding, the team sent Walker and three “draft picks” for four players and eight draft picks. Dallas’ run included three draft picks in the first round and three picks in the second round.

follow Professional Football Hall of FameIt was the biggest deal in NFL history.

At the time, Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson said, per UPI: “An employee told me it was the biggest sale in NFL history. One owner told me it was the Big Boat Robbery.”

When Denver acquired Wilson for the season, it sent three players and five draft picks to Seattle, including two first-round and second-round picks.

The Vikings and Broncos made trades to win the Super Bowls, not joining the “worst deals of all time” list.

At the time of Walker’s transaction, Vikings GM Mike Lynn said:

“We… care about winning our Center, winning the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl… The final piece of the puzzle… is… not just… It’s a back-race, a back-race.” (h/t UPI)

Minnesota made a one-time playoff appearance — in Walker’s first season — and failed to win the playoff with a highly regarded run back record. He played 43 games in his career with the Vikings, which won 21-22 during that time.

Unlike the Vikings, the Broncos are highly unlikely to make it to the knockout stages in the First Year of their blockbuster acquisition. At 3-8, Denver was in a worse position than Minnesota after handling Walker.

What the Cowboys did with the draft capital tied to the transaction sparked the Super Bowl in the 1990s. The Seahawks could make the Broncos look as bad as the Vikings.

The first round pick that the Broncos sent to Seattle was predicted to make the top 5, each Tankathon. Seattle knocked it out of the park with an stellar 2022 draft class. It could use its draft from the Broncos to build a permanent power plant.

History will judge whether the Wilson deal turns out to be worse for Denver than the Walker deal for the Vikings. Based on early returns, that’s a very bad look for Denver.
