Israeli lidar startup Innoviz will provide lidar sensors and cognitive software for all autonomous vehicles within the Volkswagen group brands, the company said Tuesday.
Innoviz will work directly with Cariad SE, VW’s automotive software company, to integrate its technology into upcoming VW vehicles.
The partnership with VW is Innoviz’s third design win with a Tier 1 supplier. In April, BMW reveals that Innoviz’s trunk lid will be available on the BMW i7 2023 electric carand last May, Innoviz has been selected by another unnamed tier 1 automotive supplier for its autonomous shuttle program.
VW has yet to reveal which models will be built first with Innoviz’s technology, but the automaker has made several moves to enhance its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and capabilities. automatic driving. This early year, Cariad and Bosch collaborate on software for autonomous driving for use in VW cars and in May, VW chooses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride platform to power ADAS and autonomous driving.
Innoviz said the VW program, which carries $4 billion in futures order books, brings the startup’s total estimated revenue to $6.6 billion.
Innoviz says it can achieve a high level of performance, imaging range up to 300 meters, at low cost by using a 905 nanometer (nm) laser. Velodyne, a rival to lidar, also uses a 905 nm laser and claims to be able to reach a range of 300 meters. However, Velodyne’s top performing lidar is 128 lines at up to 20 fps. For comparison, the Innoviz has 600 lines at up to 20 fps, the company says.
Keilaf insists Velodyne products cost thousands of dollars, while Innoviz’s products cost hundreds. TechCrunch was unable to confirm the cost with Velodyne.
“The real takeaway for Innoviz and this deal, other than that we won the deal as a tier 1 supplier,” Keilaf told TechCrunch. “Innoviz is the only lidar manufacturer to achieve this designation. This signals a major change – not just for Innoviz but for the auto industry as a whole – in the way that automakers collaborate with their technology suppliers. As a Tier 1 supplier, we benefit from direct access to OEMs, as well as increased margins and margins.”
