Indigenous Circles: The Meaning of Circles and Power
In the latest edition of Indigenous Circles, CTV National News’ Donna Sound travels northwest of Edmonton to the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, where she talks to Chief Tony Alexis about the importance of circles and strength.
“The circle is part of life, it is part of the laws of nature. If you take a pebble and throw it into the water, it will create a circle. Birds build their nests in a circular shape,” says Alexis.
Powwows itself is in the form of a circle.
“The circle is a law of nature and that’s how people make laws,” he said. “By following that, it allows us to become one with it. Sometimes we want to change things, and we can try, but in the end we always go back to what nature created for us.”
