Upcoming God of War Ragnarok is Sony’s pinnacle for 2022, coming out on November 9th. I’ve played the first few hours of Ragnarok on PlayStation 5, and boy, if that’s anything, this sequel will. is a stupid game.

There’s a lot I can’t say because of the perverts, but the first thing that caught my eye was that Ragnarok was stunningly beautiful. Kratos and Atreus’ Midgardian home is besieged by the Fimbulwinter snow, making it an even gloomier place than before, and it looks amazing on PS5. During the preview, the two also visit Svartalfheim, home of the dwarves. The festering marshland and its populous city of Nidavellir are distinctly different from other locations in the series. When we first arrived in the kingdom, both Atreus and I stopped to gasp.

Combat has also been improved, with Kratos’ signature weapons – Leviathan Ax and Blade of Chaos – available from the start. Kratos has some extra moves that he didn’t have at the beginning of the previous game, and he has more enemies he can use. I played on medium difficulty and found the battle relatively easy to pick up on and learn, although I wanted to take on tougher enemies before passing the final verdict.

There’s an early battle between Thor and Kratos that’s particularly satisfying to play. Adjusting the speed of the game is most noticeable here. It’s not an uphill fight – if it is, it looks like Thor is playing with his food. But it’s absolutely amazing to watch, especially since Thor is the first character to help Kratos really make money for a while. I won’t go into details, because I think it’s something everyone deserves to experience for themselves.

Kratos and Atreus: Dynamic Changes

One thing that always makes me feel weird God of War 2018 is its selective memory in relation to earlier games in the series. This isn’t a full reboot – Kratos is the same individual throughout the entire series. But among his many, much violent behavior in the original games, the only act that the 2018 title mentioned more than once was his murder of his father, Zeus. I see why – Kratos’ disastrous “relationship” with his father is the reason he treats his son Atreus the way he does, as he desperately wants Atreus to break this cycle and be better than he is. ta.

What the game doesn’t mention is what started the whole mess. His simply saying “I killed my father” to Atreus leaves a lot of convoluted backstory that can put that action in context. The only crime Kratos committed in history that has never been equal to himself is his murder of his first wife and daughter in a fit of rage. The end of the 2018 game implied that he made peace with it, but he didn’t tell Atreus that. And, if Ragnarok’s opening hours are any indication, he has yet to mention his first child to anyone.

At the beginning of Ragnarok, many other characters are involved in Kratos’ case because of their children. Freya is mad at him because he killed Balder. Thor is angry with him for killing Magni and Modi. Even Atreus, now a teenager and much less intimidated by his father than before, has some opinions on Kratos’ skill as a father. If they really wanted to hit Kratos with a nasty fact, any of them could easily point out that Kratos was just one of two that didn’t kill his own offspring (so far).

There’s something about the growing tension between Atreus and Kratos that makes me wonder if that particular truth will eventually emerge in the conversation. It definitely feels like anything else will cause a rift between the two. I look forward to learning more about our journey.
