IKTR! Viola Davis achieves EGOT status by winning Grammy Award
Viola Davis just won her first Grammy, earning her a spot among the coveted EGOT winners!
She has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony: ‘I Just EGOT!’
The exciting news arrived at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday, where Viola won a Grammy for her book of memoirs, find me.
In her acceptance speech, Viola emotionally shared that the inspiration behind her memoir was honoring “six-year-old Viola.” She then reflected on what her career has been “what a journey it has been” before proudly exclaiming, “I’m just ME!”
“I wrote this book in honor of six-year-old Viola. To honor her, her life, her joys, her trauma, everything. It is just such a journey. I just EGOT!
For context, “EGOT” stands for four major entertainment awards (one Emmy, one Grammy, one Oscar, and one Tony), and only eighteen have achieved the feat. at least one prize in each prize.
Her journey to this accomplishment began after earning a Tony Award in 2001 for her role in King Hedley II. She then won an Emmy and an Oscar in 2015 and 2016 respectively, before concluding the Grammys in 2023.
Viola Davis is the fourth black person to achieve EGOT . status
We must also point out that, out of eighteen EGOT winners, Viola is the fourth Black to achieve this highly anticipated achievement.
Whoopi Goldberg was the first Black star to win the EGOT title in 2002. Sixteen years later, John Legend also joined the club and he is currently the only Black to win the EGOT title. Jennifer Hudson is another EGOT winner, as she made the feat after winning a Tony award last year.
Now, thanks to a new Grammy Award win for her audiobook recording find meViola Davis has also achieved EGOT status.
