Kevin McCarthy had to make several concessions to win over hard-line Republicans who voted against him in 15 rounds.
The House of Representatives cannot move into any other business, including the swearing in of members, until the speaker is elected.
The House of Representatives is the lower house of Congress – and one of its key roles is to control the president.
But with a divided party, how will Republicans retain control of the US legislature?
