However penitent Unlike your typical pre-Black Friday game from a major publisher like Xbox Game Studios, this one might come out at the right time–after all, all the upcoming holidays could be. which means a lot of new Xbox players will join the ecosystem. With the Pentiment landing in the Game Pass on the first day, it can be a drowsy blow after receiving mostly positive reviews. Both new players and longtime Xbox fans may wonder: How long does it take to beat Pentiment? That’s a good question given the novelty of such a game. Is this a five-hour game? A game that lasts 30 hours? The answer is really somewhere in between, so keep reading as we explain the investment of your time in Obsidian’s rambling 2D RPG.
How long is the term of the Pentiment?
Repentance is divided into three acts on about 15-20 hours of the game. Despite being an RPG, the world is structured in such a way that you cannot make everything available to you on any given day in the game. This means you’ll necessarily miss some stuff–partly a murder mystery, so not all leads can be followed. It also means that multiple plays can play out differently, both between players or even if you’re just reloading a save and following a new path.
The day-night cycle of Repentance essentially limits your actions so that choosing to follow a lead will sometimes eliminate or temporarily block other opportunities. It’s pretty much like Night in the Woods in that way, if you know that reference. As a makeshift private detective journey artist, Andreas Malers can’t be in two places at once, so even though it’s not the kind of RPG you’ll skip the important path for five hours as you max out your magic stats, some branches on this complicated story tree take longer to come down, so it will take hours.
Interestingly, the game uses a no-wrong answer approach to its investigative gameplay. Maler can pursue any lead he wants, make accusations, and draw conclusions that make the most sense for the player who is controlling him. While the lack of definitive answers was a difficult point for our reviewers, as mentioned in consider regret, Obsidian will protect it as a feature, not a bug. Would you be thrilled with such an open look to a story – especially a murder mystery of all things? That is for you to decide.
Pentiment is available on Xbox and PC, including Game Pass, from November 15.
