Count dust among many believe that Grammy Award is “very irrelevant.”
However, rather than expressing his disappointment over who won and who didn’t on Sunday night, Grimes’ criticism stemmed from the organization’s supposed behind-the-scenes politics. “I even stopped following them in any capacity while I was on the producer panel of the year and they literally wouldn’t let me nominate anyone who wasn’t on the list. presets are particularly boring,” she continued. “I am one of three women and certainly the only one under 40. That’s really not a relevant thing. I tried to nominate Sophie and was told that was not allowed.”
Interestingly, Sophie is one of the artists Kim Petras honored in her acceptance speech during Sunday’s ceremony. While accepting the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her”not sacredIn collaboration with Sam Smith, Petras named the late transgender electronic musician, who worked with both Petras and Charli XCX before tragically passing away in 2021.
Of course, Grimes isn’t the first artist to call the Recording Academy and its supposed nomination practices shady. The Weeknd, who notably no longer submits his music for the Grammy Awards, tweeted after his severe 2020 derision, “The Grammy Awards are still rotten. You owe it to me, my fans, and transparency in the industry…” Then there was Zayn, who vent about a voting process that he said “allows bias, racism and political networks” to influence everything. And the former Halsey call out the organization’s “elusive process,” says, “It can often be about private performances behind the scenes, knowing the right people, campaigning through researchers, with the right handshake and ‘bribery’ can be vague enough to be considered ‘no bribe.’”
