The 2000 movie Gladiator is getting a sequel, two decades later, and now it may have found a lead role. Based on Hollywood ReporterPaul Mescal (Normal People, Aftersun) is in talks for the lead role of Lucius, son of Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen in the original film.
The Oscar-winning film Gladiator centers on Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, who is forced to become a gladiator and sword fight Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Gladiator was originally directed by Ridley Scott, who will return for the sequel.

David Scarpa (All The Money In the World) is writing the script for the new Gladiator movie. Scarpa also wrote Scott the upcoming Napoleon film Bonaparte for Scott.
Gladiator of the Year 2000 was a huge commercial and critical success, earning 500 million dollars at the box office and received 12 Oscar nominations. It won five Oscars, including best picture.
