Giannis makes huge decision with international implications

Giannis Antetokounmpo announced a big decision on social media Friday morning, a move that will have international implications.

The two-time MVP underwent surgery on his left knee earlier this summer, which “raised doubts” about his availability, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

The Milwaukee Bucks start training camp in just over one month, so the 2021 NBA champions’ need for their best player to be at full strength was certainly a factor. The 2023-24 NBA regular season begins on Oct. 24.

Antetokounmpo’s decision not only greatly impacts Greece’s chances at the FIBA World Cup, but should also have an indirect effect on Team USA’s odds as well.

Team USA and Greece will play in the same pool during the tournament and with the seven-time All-Star out of commission, the former’s chances of advancing to the second round increases dramatically, while the latter will face a tough task. Only the top-two teams in their group move on.

Jordan and New Zealand are also in the foursome with the Americans and Greeks.

Per Vardon, Greece needs a top-two finish among all European teams at the showcase to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The U.S. will host a three-game series next week in the United Arab Emirates, first taking on Greece on Aug. 18 and then Germany on Aug. 20. Germany and Greece play on Aug. 19.

The World Cup will take place in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines from Aug. 25 through Sept. 10.
