SAMSUNG keeping an eye on Web3 world. The tech giant has a pretty good track record of everything, so when deciding to invest in something, you should probably give it a try. One of Samsung’s latest investments through the next branch of Samsung is Genopets.

Genopets is the world’s first monetized blockchain game. It’s a mix of digital pets like Tamagotchis, fighting creatures like Pokémon, and town-building like Animal Crossing. Genopet is a procedurally generated pet that builds on a personality test that the game asks the player to fill out.

It is heavy on blockchain and each Genopet is an NFT. But Ben Tse, one of the creators, sees no point in doing another project based on the Ponzi mechanism. Attracting millions of potential dollars doesn’t do it for him. Nicholas Tse would rather do something fun, but more than that, something of personal value.

Ben Tse has some radical ideas about gaming. The Genopets co-founder looked at his gaming time in the past – tens of thousands of hours in games like Call of Duty and Starcraft – and realized that bragging rights weren’t worth much.

Nicholas Tse’s time is more precious than that.

He’s not quite the anti-metaverse, but he’s not a talkative person. People talk about the metaverse as somewhere for people to disappear. Nicholas Tse wants the opposite; he wants to create a game class for real life.

Genopets is what makes all of that.

Assign value to time spent

Genopet is practically a digital pet that grows and evolves based on what the player does. Things players actually do, like in real-world operations. That’s the point of the game; If you want your pet to evolve and get better, you need to make an effort yourself.

A few examples are things like sleeping well, exercising, eating well, and doing fun things in the world, like going to a concert. Tse wanted Genopets to enhance the real world, not pull gamers out of it.

Genopet is meant to be a reflection of each individual player. If you stagnate, your Genopet will stagnate. If you want to have the best, most evolved Genopet, you need to work on improving yourself and enjoying life.

Tse lives his game philosophy. Genopets Studios was founded because Tse wanted to figure out how to work with his friends. All of Genopets’ original founders and first hires were people with whom Nicholas Tse had known for some time. Working on Genopets is Nicholas Tse doing exactly what makes it possible to develop his own Genopet.

Ben Tse is using his game to create tangible value for things that tradition doesn’t have. Attending a concert can be a precious experience, but it is fleeting. Not with Genopet.

It’s a compelling concept, and Samsung seems to see the value in it.
