Recently Gartner survey of 304 infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders and their teams found that 85% of I&O leaders currently do not have a automation is expected to become more automated in the next two to three years.
With growing interest in I&O automation, Gartner predicts that by 2025, 70% of organizations will have implemented structured automation to deliver flexibility and efficiency. This is an increase from the 20% of organizations that have implemented structured automation in 2021.
The survey found that I&Os most often use automation in implementation areas, a natural focus of automation activities as organizations work to reduce friction found at intersection between the I&O and the consumer producing its technology. Most respondents said their efforts in automating application deployment, security compliance, and server deployment were impactful and valuable.
However, the increase of voraciously, Site Reliability and Agility Engineering (SRE) has led to more automation in operational areas, such as monitoring and analysis as well as problem solving. The survey found that only 43% of I&O teams are currently automating monitoring and analytics, with 83% finding such automation efforts valuable. Similarly, only 36% of I&O teams are automating incident and issue resolution, but it is considered valuable by more than 3/4 of respondents.
The survey also found that only 21% of I&O leaders report a high level of success in their automation efforts. To successfully manage I&O automation and increase success, Gartner experts advise I&O teams to automate deployments, but make sure they don’t overlook automation opportunities valuable as change management, vulnerability remediation, and backup and disaster recovery.
Lay the groundwork for success by identifying the potential value of automation, improving pre-automation processes, and equipping the workforce with critical automation skills.
