One sentence we keep repeating here is, “The year 2022 is going to be a great year for horror movies.” There was a reason for that: it was. If you look at us Best Horror Movie of 2022, According to Metacritic piece, you’ll find 10 critically acclaimed films from the past year, and each of them is now in the 100 greatest horror movies of all time. That is quite an achievement.
However, the staff at GameSpot have some opinions that differ from the review aggregator Metacritic list. Again, it’s been a great year for the horror genre, a diverse year for the horror genre, and a year that spawned loads of horror content.
So, going through a year of scary movies, we’ve found the 10 best horror movies of the past year. From gruesome ghosts terrorizing streamers to a familiar masked killer killing teenagers, there’s a ton of genres here for this one. Hopefully you’ll find some movies here that you haven’t seen and will want to see.
This list is for longtime GameSpot entertainment writer Dan Auty, who passed away earlier this year. Since starting GS’s entertainment column, Dan has been coming here, often speaking and writing about his love of horror movies. Usually, he’s covered our year-end horror movies and is the driving force behind a lot of the content in “Ghost Season”.
Not a day goes by that we don’t think about Dan or miss him. And just to share what we consider to be a very funny story, in the days before his death, and we knew what to expect, Chris E. Hayner and I (Mat Elfring) said. Talk to Dan and convince him to watch the Texas Chainsaw Massacre– a really terrible movie. He knew it wasn’t going to be a good movie, by any stretch of the imagination, but Dan was always playing the game to try and see something silly. Although he actually saw the movie before his death, we never got to hear his thoughts on it. However, we have to believe that he found a way to enjoy it, as Dan is always in a good mood and loves crappy movies. We love you, Dan.
Now, let’s talk about some good horror movies.
