Fortnite Locks and Vaults Explained: Where to Find the Keys and How to Open the Vaults

If you’ve ever come across tunnels in Fortnite, you may notice that they previously required you and some friends to stand still and be scanned to access the extras inside. Well, all of that changed with the advent of locks in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, will now have to be collected before the vault can be opened. The vaults are stacked with much better loot this time around, but they’ll take some searching on your part. Here’s how to get vault keys in Fortnite, and of course how to use them.

Where to find the key in Fortnite

Fortnite keys are found as random loot, which can be good or bad. It means you won’t need to go to specific locations and scramble for these much sought-after keys, but it also means there’s no surefire way to find them in any given round. We find our first key as loot on the floor near the suddenly barren Reality Tree. In any case, whenever you find a random key, you move on to stage two: knowing what to do with it.

Fortnite Vault and Key Usage

As soon as you find the key, your map will update with some padlock icons around the island. They represent the location of the vaults. You can get to any of them, but note how many keys it will ask you to have. The padlock icon with a keyhole means you will only need one keybut some vaults need more than that and are labeled as such on your map.

The number of keys you are holding at any given time is listed on the right side of the game’s UI, near your inventory. Oddly enough, right now it looks like using a key will put it back in your vault after, meaning you could theoretically run from vault to vault to open a number of them with the same key or key. It’s not clear if this is intentional or part of a part launch bug that will be patched soon, but we’ll update when we know more.

In either case, vaults that require multiple keys to unlock have even better loot potential than single-key vaults, but even those single-key vaults are filled with great stuff. We’ve found three rare chests, a ton of ammo, crates of Slurp Juice and more in every one we’ve opened so far, so these vaults are clearly better than last season’s vaults , tend to offer a handful of rarer tier loot rather than the legendary stuff they’re offering.
