Fire Emblem Engage – Everything We Know

Fire Emblem has spent many years relatively unknown in the West, mainly known for the appearance of several swordsmen in Super Smash Bros. Melee. That changed in 2013 with the release of Fire Emblem: Awakening, the series’ first major break in North America. Since then, the tactical RPG has become one of Nintendo’s most popular and critically acclaimed series. The newest entry in the series, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, was named one of the Best game of 2019. So needless to say, a new Fire Emblem is enough to get us super excited.

Fire Emblem Engage is that new game, a new entry in a long-running series that pays special homage to its own history. This game focuses on a main story and gameplay mechanics around summoning characters from previous Fire Emblem games, allowing us to see some of our favorite characters or learn about them. characters from the games we’ve looked at. Here’s everything we know about Fire Emblem Engage.

Story

Like many anthology RPG series, Fire Emblem doesn’t necessarily have a story that continues from game to game, but each game does share some characteristics. In Fire Emblem Engage, 1000 years have passed since the four kingdoms teamed up with each other and with heroes from other worlds to seal the Fallen Dragon on the continent of Elyos. As evil prepares to awaken again, you appear as Alear the Divine Dragon, a chosen hero who can bring back heroes from other kingdoms and seal the dragon of chaos once more. .

Like the other protagonists of Fire Emblem, Alear can be either male or female, with the same red-blue hairdo in both cases. And as you might have guessed, these otherworldly heroes are actually heroes from other Fire Emblem games. You can summon heroes like Marth and Celica using the iconic Rings, allowing you to inherit their weapons and skills, and merge your appearance with them.

style play

Like the other Fire Emblem games, Engage will be a turn-based combat strategy game with a bunch of original characters that you can upgrade and customize to your liking. It brings back the Triangle of Weapons, a rock-paper-scissor mechanic for weapon advantage that was altered in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Fire Emblem is class-based, so different classes will specialize in certain weapons, and as you level up your classes you’ll gain new specializations. In combat situations you will be fighting on a grid, so positioning your units is very important. Fire Emblem also tends to reward units fighting side-by-side if they have developed a special friendship during the non-combat parts.

Those non-combat segments will take place at your home base, this time called Somniel. That’s where you’ll talk to characters (including characters from previous games), visit shops, and most likely handle any other party management like weapons or load class. Three Houses also features social systems like romance options, but it’s not yet known if that element will appear in Fire Emblem Engage. But who knows; maybe you can get engaged. Open? Correct?

Notable guests

With the story and game mechanics revolving around bringing back popular characters from previous games, Nintendo has plenty of opportunities to introduce familiar faces ahead of launch. So far, however, we’ve only seen two people debut in the announcement trailer: Marth from the original Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and Celica from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Marth has appeared as a guest in numerous other Fire Emblem games before and serves as the main story element in Fire Emblem Awakening.

Release date

Fire Emblem Engage will be one of the earliest major releases of the year, as it’s scheduled to hit shelves on January 20, 2023.
