Elections: Caroline Simard appoints new watchdog
Ottawa –
Caroline Simard, vice president of broadcasting for the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, has been appointed Canada’s new election watchdog.
Canada’s Chief of Elections, Stephane Perrault, announced today that Simard will begin as commissioner for the Canadian elections in August.
The Commissioner is responsible for enforcing election laws and conducting investigations of violations, among other enforcement activities.
Perrault said in a statement that Simard will help protect the integrity of the voting system and maintain public confidence in federal elections.
Simard takes over from Yves Cote, who is ending his 10-year term as Canada’s election commissioner.
Perrault thanked Cote for his tireless work and dedication to serving the people of Canada, not only as an election commissioner but throughout his career in public service.
