A usually very vocal Donald Trump decided to invoke his Fifth Amendment in a impeachment statement today. He declined to answer questions from Letitia James, the New York attorney general, CNN reported.
“On the advice of my attorney and for all of the above reasons, I have declined to answer questions about the rights and privileges afforded to all citizens under the United States Constitution,” Trump said in a statement.
The removal comes after a three-year investigation surrounding the Trump Organization’s alleged misrepresentation of insurers and lenders with financial statements.
Trump also said he would be meeting with James about the “America Witch Hunt” on the social platform Truth.
The expected removal is one of many happening this week for Trump. On Tuesday, the FBI served Trump with a warrant to search his Mar-a-Lago home in connection with an investigation into whether the former president brought classified documents from the White House to his residence.
Donald Trump’s lawyer Ronald Fischetti said he wanted to answer the “bad” questions but was advised against doing so.
This move is in stark contrast to the 76-year-old’s previous rhetoric about staying silent when innocent.
At a Trump rally in Iowa, he stated:
If you’re innocent, why would you do the Fifth Amendment?
On Wednesday, the businessman said he now knows “the answer to that question.”
Attorney General speaks out about impeachment
A spokesperson for James stated in part:
Attorney General Letitia James was involved in the impeachment in which Mr. Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. Attorney General James will pursue facts and legislation wherever they can lead. Our investigation continues.
Donald Trump’s 2007 abdication
CNN reports that Trump has testified about his financial situation before. In 2007, in a defamation lawsuit, he claimed that his net worth was based on “emotions”. The former reality TV star says “everyone” exaggerates their net worth.
When asked if he’s exaggerating his worth, the 2024-doubted candidate for President replied:
Not without reason.
What do you think about this?
