Adam Sandler, known for one of his most infamous roles as Happy Gilmore in the 1996 comedy, took to Twitter to thank a teenage golfer who also shares the same iconic name. .
“Go get em Happy,” the Murder Mystery 2 the actor wrote on Friday. “Drag for you.”
Sandler was praised after the high school student shared on social media that he had committed to the Ball State University golf program.
“I am delighted to announce that I have committed to further my academic and golf career at Ball State University,” he wrote. “I am so grateful for the opportunity Coach Fleck gave me! I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for motivating me every day!”
In the film directed by Dennis Dugan, Sandler’s character, a rejected hockey player, realizes he may have talent in a completely different sport: golf. After learning that his grandmother is about to lose her home, he joins a golf tournament to test his skills on the course and try to win enough money to save her house.
Last year, Gilmore, whose real name is Landon, said Indianapolis star that he adopted “Happy” as his nickname when he started playing in golf tournaments around the age of six.
“My mother said it happened before, but I really remember it when I was nine years old,” he told the newspaper. “Then, when I was 13, I started calling him ‘Happy’ all the time.”
The guy said he always gets a reaction from others when he introduces himself for the first time. “They would look at me funny,” he added. “But if my golf bag is there and has my name on it, that helps a bit. But it never fails. At some point they will ask me, ‘Is that your real name?’ or ‘How did you get that name?’ Something along those lines.
Gilmore also noted that he was actually able to do Sandler’s iconic turn in the film, but he hasn’t been practicing it lately. “I haven’t done it in a while so maybe I’m a bit calloused,” he explains. “But just give me a few balls, and I can usually make pretty good contact.”
