49ers share alarming Nick Bosa contract update

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan certainly hid their feelings if they’re truly confident superstar pass-rusher Nick Bosa will sign a contract extension before the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“No updates,” Lynch said about the situation while speaking with reporters on Wednesday, as shared by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. “Yeah, I’m going to stick to that. But [there is] communication, and that’s a good thing, so I’ll leave it at that.”

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport suggested earlier this week that Bosa could remain away from the team through the start of the regular season amid the contract dispute. However, a Wednesday morning report offered hope that the two sides might come to an agreement in time for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year to feature against Pittsburgh on Sept. 10.

Shanahan did not express such optimism on Wednesday.

“You guys know how we feel about Nick, and we all know how good of a player he is,” Shanahan said during his comments. “So hopefully, we can come to terms soon and get him here as fast as possible.”

It’s believed Bosa, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, is looking to become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history via an extension. Shanahan said Wednesday he knows Lynch’s team is “working tirelessly” to get a deal done so the 49ers can get Bosa back “sooner than later” with game-week practices quickly approaching.

“I thought (a deal) would come probably at this time, looking at the history of those things,” Shanahan added, according to Cam Inman of The Mercury News.

One thing Shanahan and Lynch made clear is that trading Bosa rather than paying the 25-year-old is absolutely not on the table ahead of September.

“I haven’t talked to many people about that but I know I feel pretty strongly,” Shanahan said about a possible trade. “I think everyone would agree to that.”

Meanwhile, Lynch directly said that “there isn’t” any chance he might consider trading Bosa.
