Job search can be stressful, as can a lot of work. It can also take a lot of time — according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average job search takes about five months.
With so much new talent entering the labor market thanks to the series of layoffs currently affecting the tech industry – Layoffs.fyi data indicates that there is already too much 108,000 jobs cut so far this year — honing a competitive edge is essential.
A bit of relief for those in tech in particular is the fact that laid-off tech professionals can quickly find new jobs. A recent survey found that 79% of people who were fired from a tech company’s job got a new job within three months of starting the search, and nearly four out of 10 of them found a job in less than a month.
That’s good news, but what else can you do to speed up and improve your job search?
Enter ChatGPT. As a natural language processing chatbot, it is driven by AI technology that allows you to ask it questions, have surprisingly human-like conversations and get answers to topics complicated.
Chatbots can also be used in many ways to help you land a new job both before applying and preparing for an interview. Here are four ways you can make ChatGPT work for you.
1. Identify keywords in the job description
Job applicants often don’t understand the importance of using keywords from the job description in their resume. This is because a large number of recruitment professionals use software called application tracking systems (ATS) to scrape resumes as a first step. More than 98.8% of Fortune 500 companies use ATS, as do 66% of large companies and 35% of small organizations.
Paste the job description into ChatGPT and ask it to tell you the three to five most important responsibilities. This will give you actionable keywords to include on your resume and beat the bots.
2. Personalize your resume and cover letter
Yes, ChatGPT can also create personalized versions of your resume that match the job description. This is another important step to take as it elevates your resume from the basics and makes it highly relevant.
Do three things: Ask ChatGPT to “personalize my resume for this [Job Title] role at [Company]”. Then paste the job ad and paste it on your existing resume. Take the time to tailor the results to fit your role and be personalized to you.
The tool can also help with cover letters, providing structured style and formatting that you can tweak. Ask it to “write a cover letter for a Java developer job”, and you will get a surprisingly useful copy––although that copy will require some editing and additional information from Friend.
3. Helps you understand complex terms
It’s interview time and you’re applying for an extended role. Some concepts in the job description are not concepts that you are familiar with. ChatGPT can help: ask the app to explain a complicated topic or technical jargon that you’re not familiar with and it will return a concise, simple English explanation that can really help for you.
4. Write interview questions
Another scary aspect of the interview process is when you’re asked, “do you have any questions for us?” Yes: you do. You can ask the app to generate questions in a variety of ways — ask for the most common questions to ask at an interview, or ask the app to make personalized recommendations based on a job description. which you can paste.
While this is a tool that can automate parts of the job search, it’s important to note that it’s not a replacement for you; After all, it generates answers from data sets. Carefully edit its answers, add your own personal details, and you’ll get the best out of the bot.
