Unicef says it best: “The business case is clear: Investing in family-friendly policies improves workforce productivity and the ability to attract, motivate and retain employee of a company”.
The agency, a division of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and development aid to children worldwide, recommends that employers make some strategy to support working parents.
These include a minimum of six months of paid leave, ensuring that women are not discriminated against, facilitating appropriate breastfeeding in the workplace and supporting access to childcare quality and affordable price.
Working parents in the US have long been frustrated with what is offered in their workplaces, and while some companies are doing the work to support employees with families, a bright light is on. More brilliance has shone on this issue since the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced so many workers home. Today, offices in major American cities more than half busy as before, according to data from security vendor Kastle Systems.
Based on Gallup data, six out of 10 employees with the ability to work remotely want a hybrid placement. About a third prefer to work completely remotely, and less than 10% prefer to be in the office. That part of the picture is clear, but for parents, what else do they really want from their employer?
A 2021 survey about 1,500 working parents from a family interests background Cleo finds that 40% of the workforce are parents. With disruption already a major concern for the entire U.S. workforce (In 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 47 million Americans voluntarily leave their jobs), those Parents who feel included and supported in their workplace are 41% less likely to leave.
Additionally, Cleo’s survey found that more than a third of parents planning to quit are doing so due to a lack of flexibility. Childcare is the most requested benefit by parents, but less than a fifth of working families have access through their employer.
Companies that offer family and childcare complementary health and family benefits will lead the race for the best talent. For example, Adobe supporting LGBTQ+ employees with progressive family planning and personal support benefits, including same-sex dependent partner health care coverage, adoption and surrogacy assistance, and paid leave non-birth parents up to 16 weeks.
Professional service company Deloitte company has a considered set of benefits and remunerations for its people, with the aim of creating a culture that fosters personal and professional growth. It offers (depending on the territory) a variety of programs to support families, among other benefits. These include adoption/surrogacy leave, childcare leave and parental leave, as well as foster and caregiving leave.
The company has also introduced regulations for how its teams want to work, with options for summer pent-up workweeks and hybrid work arrangements, as important and valuable as So for parents.
Cisco also offers family-friendly benefits. The company’s paternity leave policy provides paid leave that is not determined by the gender of the parent or which parent was born, but the parent will be the primary caregiver. Grandparents who work there get three days off to help when a new baby joins the family, and the company also offers subsidized childcare, paid time off, and insurance.
