‘1899’ canceled on Netflix – The Hollywood Reporter

by Netflix 1899 was canceled after one season.

Showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese announced the news on Instagram through a joint statement on Monday.

“With a heavy heart, we must tell you that 1899 will not be extended,” the statement read. “We would love to end this incredible journey with a second and third season like we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t go the way you planned. That is life.”

The statement continued, “We knew this was going to disappoint the millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you have been a part of this great adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

The eight-episode series premieres on Netflix on November 17, 2022 and focuses on the journey of a migrating steamship heading west. The journey soon takes an unexpected terrifying turn when another migratory ship, the Prometheus, adrift on the high seas is discovered, which subsequently exposes the group of passengers to a series of mysterious events.

The multilingual series features an international cast that includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier , José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser, among others.

In an interview with Hollywood ReporterAdar and Friede tease that they already have ideas for a second and third season for 1899.

This series is the sequel to the previous series by Adar and Friede Dark, which lasted for three seasons. In 2018, Friede and Odar signed an exclusive multi-year master deal with the streamer. The pact marks the first European master deal for Netflix and 1899 is the couple’s first new series under their master Netflix deal.
