Ten people were killed and nine injured in a fire at a residential building in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region, state media reported on Friday.
The fire broke out in a high-rise building on Thursday night, around 7:50 p.m. (11:50 GMT), Xinhua said.
Xinhua News Agency reported: “Ten people have died despite being treated in time.
“Nine other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” the agency added, adding that an investigation into the fire had begun.
Deadly fires are frequent in China, due to weak safety standards and the corruption of the officials tasked with enforcing them.
This week, 38 people were killed and two injured in a fire at a factory in the central Chinese city of Anyang.
Authorities blamed “electrical welding workers for violating safety measures”.
